Jaime + Brian

Introduced by a mutual friend, Jaime and Brian hit it off right away and soon were spending as much time as they could together. “We didn’t do things the conventional way,” says Jaime. “We had our daughter, Ella, in 2015 and were married in 2016.” Brian proposed on Christmas Day, 10 days after Ella was born. “He placed the ring box on baby Ella and waited for me to discover it,” says Jaime. “The wait wasn’t long, some tears of joy were shed and a big ‘yes’ was yelled.” For their October wedding, Jaime and Brian decided on a “very intimate, elegant, and beautiful, but also simple” ceremony and reception with 20 family members and friends onboard the schooner Bagheera, operated by the Portland Schooner Company. “We live in Portland and love our city and wanted to be surrounded by the sea, the islands, and the city on our wedding day,” says Jaime. Following the two-hour sail, everyone headed to Salvage BBQ for a family-style dinner. “After dinner, we had a bunch of friends that couldn’t have fit on the boat join us at Novare Res for drinks,” says Brian. “So everything took place right here on or slightly east of the Portland peninsula.”

SETTING SAIL FOR LOVE

LOCATION

The couple stayed at the Press Hotel, where they dressed before walking to the waterfront for their wedding. “It was a very brisk and sunny October day as we walked from the hotel together arm in arm through the Old Port down to the Maine State Pier,” says Jaime. “To see everyone on the sailboat ready to sail away was quite the magical scene.”

INVITATIONS

Having designed stationery for Vera Wang Fine Stationery and William Arthur Stationery, Jaime created the couple’s blue and white nautical-style invitations. The background was hand painted with a light wash of watercolor before being printed with the text and monogram. Jaime also designed and hand-cut the envelope liners, and calligraphed the addresses on the outer envelopes.

CEREMONY

The wedding ceremony took place an hour into the sail, as the boat coasted along in a wind-sheltered spot on Casco Bay. “Our dear friend, Madeleine, married us,” says Jaime. “We wrote our own vows to share in this very intimate, romantic setting. Ella, who was 10 months old at the time, was also on the boat to witness this special day with us.”

FLOWERS AND DÉCOR

Jaime purchased a variety of roses, eucalyptus, and calla lilies at Whole Foods to create her bouquet and the groom’s boutonniere. On board the boat, “the backdrop of the sea and the beautiful Bagheera schooner was really all we needed,” she says.
